Trend: Punctuation
by Sara Naumann
Brackets and parentheses. Quote
marks. And exclamation points. The latest
twist in papercrafting incorporates big, bold
punctuation marks.
This cool new Punctuation Trend comes directly
from the print media and advertising industries,
both of whom have been incorporating punctuation
as attention-getting design elements in layouts—and
now papercrafters are taking those same elements
and using them for stylish pages.
But this punctuation isn’t your basic
dots and exclamation points. These are larger-than-life
punctuation marks: 2” tall ampersands
and 5” long brackets, for example. Great
big asterisks, commas, arrows and checkmarks
are all part of the trend. The look is clean,
contemporary — and very versatile. Black
punctuation marks look stylishly retro, while
scuffed and faded elements can easily go vintage.
These oversized punctuation marks can also
be embellished. Staple ribbon along the edge
of a bracket, dot a question mark with a brad,
sand or scuff or distress them—or use
a template and rubber stamping ink, paint or
chalk to apply them onto paper or onto a photo.
Whether as a design element on a layout or
incorporated into journaling, the Punctuation
Trend is perfect for scrapbooking, cardmaking,
collage and so many other papercrafts. Manufacturers
are responding: Look for oversized punctuation
marks to come as stamps, rub-ons, templates
or embellishments in metal or chipboard to
add the latest look!
